Abstract
With the progressive aging, the osteoporotic spine is becoming more prevalent, and necessarily, the prevention and management of osteoporotic compression fractures are becoming more common aspects of the practice of medicine. The early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis are of the great interest to minimize the economic consequence. We have studied to determine the relationship of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture type and bone mineral density (BMD). Osteoporosis was defined as bone density that is 2.5 standard deviations below average. We have got the radiologic image of 69 patients (67 women and 1 men) with osteoporotic compression. We have reviewed vertebral BMD and whole body bone scan (WBBS) or MRI. We have measured the vertebral heights, vertebral bone mineral density and bone counts of vertebral bodies on osteoporotic patients. Anterior, middle, posterior height of vertebrae were measure, and the severity of vertebral compression fracture were calculated. The type of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture is consisted of wedge type, biconcave type, and crush type. The type of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture wes not correlated to the BMD and the severity of vertebral compression fracture but age. Also, age was correlated to the BMD.
